To honor the 250th anniversary of American Independence, Mount Vernon Cemetery is proud to dedicate its history and nature trail as Independence Way.
The name commemorates this historic national milestone while recognizing Philadelphia's central role in the founding of our nation. As one of the city's historic rural cemeteries, Mount Vernon Cemetery is uniquely positioned to preserve and share the stories of the individuals, landscapes, and ideals that helped shape both Philadelphia and the United States.
Independence Way begins with the cemetery's Green Burial Trail, marking the first stage of an interactive trail system that will wind through the 27-acre property. As the trail network expands, it will connect historic areas of the cemetery through a series of interpretive stops highlighting notable individuals, the cemetery's rich history, and the importance of environmental stewardship and conservation.
The name Independence Way reflects the enduring ideals of liberty, service, perseverance, and innovation that have defined our nation for 250 years. It serves as a reminder that cemeteries are more than places of remembrance—they are living landscapes where history is preserved, nature is protected, and the stories of those who came before us continue to inspire future generations.
This dedication marks the beginning of a lasting vision for Mount Vernon Cemetery. As Independence Way continues to develop, it will provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the cemetery as a place where history, heritage, conservation, and reflection come together.
It is with great honor that we announce the naming of Independence Way as Mount Vernon Cemetery's tribute to the 250th Anniversary of the United States, linking the birthplace of American democracy with a renewed commitment to preserving our shared heritage.
